THE LONG ISLAND COUNCIL FOR THE SOCIAL STUDIES
LICSS membership is open to social studies
professionals at the elementary, middle, high school, college,
and university levels in public and nonpublic schools and
other educational institutions who live or work in Nassau
and Suffolk counties.

The Long Island Council for the Social Studies is the
voice of social studies on Long Island. As one of the
largest and strongest social studies organizations in
the United States, LICSS also speaks for its members
at the State and even the national level.
When
you join LICSS, you add your voice to that of our 1300
members. Through its newsletter, position papers, and
active in person participation in social studies education
on Long Island, in New York, and on the national scene,
LICC advocates for the classroom social studies teacher.

In addition to the Annual Conference, members attend
other LICSS programs at Member Rates: These include:

for which
- Professional Development hours are documented.

The LICSS web site provides another means of keeping member
up to date on actions and programs, and quickly gets registration
forms into member’s hands. It also offers a single, direct
means of activating links to social studies information
and resources at all grade levels and in all social studies
content areas.

Latest Information: |
Not only does LICSS advocate for social studies, it keeps
you informed on local, State Education Department, and
even national activities that affect the social studies.

| Annual
Conference: |
The LICSS Annual Conference is one of the largest social
studies conferences in the United States. In one day,
participants are offered as many as FIFTY workshops, and
have the opportunity to attend a Materials Exhibit of
over FIFTY Tables.

Publications: |
LICSS members receive five issues of our newsletter, The
Advocate to keep you up to date on actions, teaching
strategies and resources, workshops, and other activities
in support of social studies. Members also receive The
Long Island Hurricane. The only local social studies
council journal, it contains both scholarly articles and
classroom strategies.

LICSS membership entitles teachers to be nominated for
LICSS awards.
