National Council for the Social Studies 2005 Program of Excellence Award

The National Council for the Social Studies 2005 Social Studies Program of Excellence Award went to the New York and Slavery: Complicity and Resistance curriculum edited by Dr. Alan Singer of Hofstra University assisted by a team of teachers. Dr. Singer, a long time member of LICSS and frequent presenter at the LICSS annual conference, was assisted by other LICSS members, including Mary Carter and April Francis. New online publication available

The State Education Department has posted its newest online publication, World Communities What is a Culture? for grade three teachers. This new guide to selecting and teaching about world communities at grade three includes practical guidelines, worksheets and resources for both teachers and students. This trend has been seen across the nation. The National Council for History Education, the National Council for the Social Studies, the New York State Council for the Social Studies and LICSS are among organizations advocating for social studies with Washington politicians.
